Maverick Playing Cards Return to American Manufacturing After 24 Years with New Back Design
In an era when "Made in USA" carries renewed significance, Maverick Playing Cards have made a historic return to American manufacturing after 24 years overseas. For the first time since 2001, these iconic decks are once again being produced at the United States Playing Card Company's facility in Erlanger, Kentucky.
Originally launched in 1959 as a tie-in to the legendary ABC western series starring James Garner, Maverick Playing Cards became a beloved American brand. After USPCC acquired the brand in 2001, production moved to China and Taiwan. Now, the 2025 edition marks a triumphant homecoming—complete with a completely redesigned geometric back design that distinguishes these USA-made decks from every previous version.
This milestone creates three distinct eras in Maverick's 66-year history and offers collectors an opportunity to own cards that reconnect the brand with its American manufacturing heritage. Discover the full story of how television's coolest cardsharp inspired a playing card brand that has traveled from Hollywood to overseas factories and back home again.

The Emergence of 100% Plastic Playing Cards: A Revolution in Card Technology
The playing card industry experienced a transformative shift in 1935 when Austrian inventor Siegfried Klausner partnered with bridge promoter Ely Culbertson to launch KEM Playing Cards—the world’s first 100% plastic playing cards. Made from cellulose acetate and selling for $2.50 per pack (equivalent to $42.50 today), these revolutionary cards offered unprecedented durability, washability, and longevity.
World War II proved to be the catalyst for widespread adoption, as troops discovered plastic cards could withstand jungle humidity, desert sand, and constant handling where paper cards would fail. This military validation established plastic cards’ reputation for reliability under extreme conditions.
The casino industry embraced plastic cards for their security advantages, economic benefits, and operational efficiency. Today’s World Series of Poker relies exclusively on premium plastic cards from manufacturers like COPAG, KEM, and Modiano, cementing their status as the professional standard.
From Klausner’s cellulose acetate breakthrough to modern PVC innovations featuring RFID integration, 100% plastic playing cards represent nearly a century of technological advancement that fundamentally changed gaming worldwide.
